The Interdisciplinary Youth Team and the Institute for Balkan Studies are holding a scientific meeting for Postgraduate Students, Doctoral Candidates andYoung Researchers on the topic of “The Balkan States during World War II (1939 – 1945)“
The meeting will take place in Thessaloniki on 21 – 22 October 2017.
The aim of this meeting is the dissemination of research conducted by young researchers and the presentation of new problems and approaches. Some typical subject areas include:
  • Political and Diplomatic Events
  • War Planning and Military Operations
  • Society and Economics
  • Resistance and Collaboration
  • Forms of Violence and the Holocaust
  • Ethnic Issues
  • Ideology and Propaganda
  • Remembrance and Heritage
  • Cultural Activity
The suggested subject areas include, obviously, more specialised topics, facets and manifestations on the period under research. The ‘Political and Diplomatic Events’ relate to the war as a whole from its start, the domination of Nazi Germany and its policies in the area, the diverse internal power configurations within the Balkan states, and extend to the postwar imposition of communist regimes and the civil conflicts in 1945. Under the specialised topic ‘Society and Economics’ we seek to analyze different examples relating to the supply of food and the financial exploitation of the Balkan states by the occupying powers, while ‘Forms of Violence’relates to internal conflicts, regardless of political ideology or the terror policies by the Nazi troops against civilians. In conclusion, under ‘Remembrance and Heritage’ and ‘Cultural Activity’ we seek to discuss memories and postwar interpretations as well as efforts to protect, preserve or seize cultural monuments and treasures.
